GMAT OVERVIEW

The GMAT is a standardized test designed to test your ability to succeed in an MBA program.  It is administered by the Graduate Management Admission Council.

The GMAT is broken down into three sections:

  1. An Analytical Writing section designed to test your ability to discern data and information in the technical context of modern business

  2. A Quantitative section that tests your ability to handle complex mathematical and analytical operations key to today’s fast-paced business environment.

  3. A Verbal Section that tests your general ability to process written information.

GMAT TEST

The GMAT test is a statistically-normed test (AKA “standardized”) that students take before consideration for entrance to an MBA program.  There are several steps involved in taking the test:

  1. You have to register with GMAC to take the test, and pick a time and location.
  2. You have to show up on test day to take the GMAT test, these days it’s 100% on computer in the computer-adaptive-test format (CAT).
  3. You have to wait for your scores to come in.
  4. You can then reassess your prospects for getting into your school of choice, or even better, can go to a better school because of your score.

One of the things to remember about your GMAT test is that it is not the end of the world if you do not score in the 99th percentile.  Even a score in the 50th or 70th percentile can be more than enough performance if your grades, work experience, and other admissions criteria are adequate.

Total GMAT scores range from 200 to 800. About 66% of test takers score between 400 and 600.

THE SCORES

The Verbal and Quantitative scores range from 0 to 60. Scores below 9 and above 44 for the Verbal section or below 7 and above 50 for the Quantitative section are rare. The Analytical Writing Assessment (AWA) score is an average of the ratings given to the Analysis of an Issue and the Analysis of an Argument sections. Each response is given two independent ratings, one graded by a computer program and one by a person. Once both essays have been scored, the scores are averaged to provide an overall score. Scores for the AWA can range from 0 to 6 in half-point intervals.
