About the College
Gauhati University is the first University established in North East India. The University was established under the Gauhati University Act 1947 (Assam Act, XVI of 1947) in the year 1948.
The first Court meeting of the University was held on 26-1-48 at the old Sudmerson Hall of Cotton College, Guwahati. Accordingly the date of 26 January is observed as the Foundation Day of Gauhati University. The University which started functioning from the city centre was shifted to the present campus in 1955-56.
It is affiliated to the association of Indian Universities, which is affiliation of Commonwealth Universities. It is the oldest and largest University of the North Eastern Region. At present it has 194 affiliated colleges offering under-graduate and post-graduate courses in Arts, Science, Commerce, Law, Engineering and Medicine.

The department is currently undergoing an ambitious drive to upgrade the software support facilities as a part of its philosophy of continuous improvement.
Apart from this, the department has full access to the University’s general facilities and resources like the K.K. Handique central library, which has around 250000 collections, the computer center, the B.K. Borua auditorium with a seating capacity of 2500, indoor stadium complexes, medical facilities, university guesthouses and club, reading rooms etc.
